The Benedicite is a canticle that is sung in Catholic, Anglican and Lutheran worship. The text is from the Prayer of Azariah and Song of the Three Holy Children, a passage which appears in Daniel in some versions of the bible.
The words feature a repeated phrase of “Bless ye the Lord. Praise him, and magnify him for ever.” which I turned into a refrain. The 32 verses I then arranged into seven longer verses which I set to a strophic tune. The music is somewhat jazz-inflected and was written for Nic Pillow in 2008 – it was first performed in East Tytherton, Wiltshire accompanied by a jazz trio.
