Here, O my Lord, I see thee face to face

This setting of the communion hymn by the Scottish minister and writer Horatius Bonar (1808–1889) was written in March 1987 and first performed later that year by the choir of All Saints’ Church, Wokingham. It is dedicated to David Jaques, a tenor in the choir who I sang with when I switched from bass to tenor in my mid-teenage years.
The music is in a straightforward diatonic style that pays homage to the music of composer Herbert Sumsion (1899–1995). The piece was revised and expanded in 1997 to include a contrasting middle verse section.
