Nowell Sing We

Composed in 2023|Difficulty: Intermediate

Back in 2011 I was asked by a fellow choral singer to write a new SATB a cappella arrangement of Good King Wenceslas for a specific reason – the excellent arrangement by David Willcocks in the Carols for Choirs 1 book had an essential organ part and thus was not easily performed by an unaccompanied choir. I wrote the arrangement the following year and started to add a few further a cappella arrangements, particularly for carols where a suitable unaccompanied arrangement is not widely available. My approach to arranging is to aim for simple and straightforward treatments, with little divisi or elaborate harmonic or rhythmic effects.

This project continued on for just over a decade and the final result is the book Nowell Sing We, which includes fifty Christmas carols arranged for SATB unaccompanied.
