There is a rose-tree

Composed in 2020|Difficulty: Moderately easy

This short Christmas carol is a setting of the well-known 15th century German Marian hymn, Es ist ein Ros entsprungen, translated into English by Abbie Farwell Brown (1871–1927). The text speaks in glowing terms of the Rose, a symbolic reference to the Virgin Mary. I have tried to clothe these words with music of a direct and slightly yearning style.
It is available in scorings for SATB choir and for SAMen choir.
